Family photo shoot around Abbey Road, London
Family photography by Annie Armitage London Abbey Road

I was originally contacted by the family for a “Family at home“ photography session but they wanted to do it with a difference.

As they had spent so much time at home during lockdown they wanted to do an urban shoot in London and their vision of recreating the Beatles walk across the zebra crossing next to Abbey Road studios.

It did mean doing my research, planning, pre-shoot visit to ensure that I certainly got the look and feel of the recreation correct.

One thing I couldn’t do was to be as high as original photograph because I couldn’t take a pair of stepladders to the middle of the road without closing the road so I took my little kitchen stool with me.

We started early on a bank holiday Monday to avoid the traffic and even then there are lorries and quite a few cars and I had to be very wary not to get run over!

After we’ve got the shot in the bag I then did urban portraits and group shots of the family around about Abbey Road.

I always get some nerves before a shoot even after 15 years of being a photographer because I want to do my very best for my clients.
Obviously, I want to capture the family having fun together but I love to take beautiful portraits. Not only of the children but also the parents. We should never compare ourselves in looks with our younger selves but embrace what we have as sure enough we will look back in 10 years time and wonder what the fuss was about and how young we look.

These parents were a delight to photograph as they embraced all my ideas and enjoyed the experience.

As far as what products they had from the experience. They bought a large classic black frame, white mount of the family all sitting on the steps and an even bigger frame with the image of them all crossing the zebra crossing. They were very happy with the results and so was I!

Just out of interest – where is your favourite place in London?
